There are numerous reasons attributing to the epidemic that is weight loss in elderly patients. There are certain physical, psychological, and social conditions that can cause a decline in weight. Some are inevitable, such as a direct response to a severe disease; however, some have the potential to be treated and reverted. The first step in managing weight loss ultimately has to be to figure out the reason behind why it’s happening in the first place and work from there. It’s estimated that one in five nursing home residents experience malnutrition in some form. Malnutrition is dangerous in that it ultimately leads to both physical and cognitive decline over a period of time.
There are many ways to combat this, though. This is, of course, excluding inevitable factors. Some times, simply hiring the right foodservice provider makes a substantial difference in avoiding, or fixing, weight loss in the elderly population. There are a variety of dietary restrictions that impact people’s day-to-day lives and how they choose, or have, to eat. This impacts their decision on every store in which they food shop, every restaurant or other establishment they choose to eat, and every foodservice provider they choose to hire. Those who don’t accommodate these restrictions are driving people away. It plays so much into their everyday lives because of both personal feelings and health reasons.
One of those dietary restrictions is vegetarianism. There are two different types of vegetarians, lacto-ovo, which essentially means that those who choose this lifestyle do not eat direct animal products, but still are able to have animal byproducts; and there’s strict, which is a vegan lifestyle, which means absolutely no animal or animal byproduct is ingested. This article is going to specifically focus on the branch that is lacto-ovo vegetarianism. The food we use to fuel our bodies our bodies impacts us more than we know. Utilizing healthy and hearty foods from every food group is essential to ensure we’re giving our bodies the vitamins and nutrients it needs to function at peak performance. That being said, one of the most difficult times in our lives to eat healthy is during college. Whether it be struggling financially or juggling a huge workload, there are many reasons why we may neglect our health during our college years. However, there are some simple steps to combat this.
