The Importance of Locally Sourced/Farmed Foods

Locally sourced and farmed foods are becoming increasingly in demand for all age groups. Who can blame them -- the benefits are undoubtedly profound in comparison to the pre-packaged foods we’ve become so accustomed to over the years. There are numerous ways in which switching to locally sourced foods is far more beneficial for everyone involved in the process.
This article delves into the five main important reasons behind why everyone should be on board with utilizing their locally sourced foods.

1. Freshness

Food that isn’t locally sourced typically has to go through quite the journey from where it's harvested to its ultimate destination. That is not to say food that makes that trek isn’t modified to be fresh upon arrival, but the ability to have hand-picked, farm fresh fruits and vegetables, proteins, and other various food groups makes all the difference. Most people agree that you can taste the difference of fresh food, and it makes for an all around more enjoyable meal.

2. Environment

Choosing to provide locally sourced/farmed foods has a greater impact than just a fresher taste; since it doesn’t have to go through the travel, it ultimately helps the environment by creating less carbon pollution. The vast majority of the shipment for processed food is done largely by trucks followed by planes, trains, and ships. All of these emit pollutants in their own way, so diminishing this helps environmental sustainability.

3. Health

It’s safe to say there’s no way to know exactly what’s going into the heavily processed foods we’re typically consuming. These locally sourced foods contain little to no pesticides; even if these farmers are using a small amount of chemicals, it’s much easier to talk to them face-to-face and ask them what they’re using. Knowing how your food is grown and what is going into your body ultimately makes a huge difference with your overall health and well being.

4. Helps Local Economy

Buying local foods ultimately helps the local economy. The money you're spending stays within the community in which you live and generates more income for the local economy. Large corporations may care more about profit than their customers' satisfaction, but local farmers create great relationships all around.

GKM knows the importance of locally sourced food and how helpful it is in every aspect. Contact us to find out more about how we play a part in this.
