The food we use to fuel our bodies our bodies impacts us more than we know. Utilizing healthy and hearty foods from every food group is essential to ensure we’re giving our bodies the vitamins and nutrients it needs to function at peak performance. That being said, one of the most difficult times in our lives to eat healthy is during college. Whether it be struggling financially or juggling a huge workload, there are many reasons why we may neglect our health during our college years. However, there are some simple steps to combat this.
1. Eat Breakfast
It’s easy to sleep too late or simply not have time with a hectic schedule to eat breakfast. However, breakfast really just might be the most important meal of the day. Starting your day off with a literal break of your fast (hint: origin of the word breakfast) from the previous night not only begins your day in the right direction, but also is thought to give you more energy for the remainder of the day. There is also some scientific data backing the importance of breakfast. It is linked to decreasing blood sugar, thus helping any mood swings that may arise throughout the day. Guess breakfast really may be the most important meal of the day!
2. Watch the Caffeine Consumption
We know - this is easier said than done. This doesn’t mean a total lack of caffeine, but rather keeping the soda and energy drinks to a minimum. High levels of caffeine are obviously linked to sleeplessness and/or insomnia, which is ultimately damaging to both your physical and mental health. All-nighters fueled by caffeine have become far too common of a phenomenon in recent years, and it’s so important to put your health before anything else.
3. Avoid Late Night Snacking... of the Unhealthy Variety
Again, this step is easier said than done, and we know that. If there is an absolute need to indulge in late night snacking, we would recommend healthy foods as opposed to the ever-so-common fast food run. This can be done by stocking up on quick and healthy snacks. There’s also an alternative for members of Greek Life with Chapter meal plans.
